5 Fishing Knots And How To Tie Them

Fishing is a super fun activity to do outdoors. All you’ll need is a rod, reel, line, and a hook to give you a chance at catching fish. But what connects all of them together? A good fishing knot!

Learning how to tie fishing knots isn’t hard, but there are different types for different scenarios that you’ll need to know if you want to be a master angler. Want to learn 5 today? Great, keep reading!

The Improved Clinch Knot

This knot is a favorite among anglers because it's strong and reliable. It's perfect for attaching your fishing line to hooks, lures, or swivels. Here's how to do it:

  1. Thread the end of the line through the hook's eye.

  2. Make 5 to 7 wraps around the standing line.

  3. Thread the end of the line back through the first loop and then through the big loop.

  4. Moisten your knot and pull the standing line and the tag end in opposite directions to tighten.

The Palomar Knot

This knot is simple, but it's one of the strongest out there. Here's how to do it:

  1. Double the line and pass it through the eye of the hook.

  2. Tie an overhand knot in the doubled line, but don't tighten it.

  3. Pass the hook through the loop of the doubled line and tighten the knot by pulling on the standing line and the tag end.

The Albright Knot

This versatile knot is perfect for joining two different types of fishing line together. It's often used to attach a leader line to a main line, especially when the two lines have different sizes or materials. Here's how to do it:

  1. Double over the leader line and insert it through the loop of the main line.

  2. Make several wraps (10-12) with the leader line around both strands of the main line.

  3. Thread the leader line back through the loop and pull it tight.

The Blood Knot

This popular knot is great for joining two pieces of fishing line together. It's perfect for creating a leader when you're fishing for trout or other species that may require a more subtle presentation. Here's how to do it:

  1. Begin by overlapping the two lines to be joined.

  2. Take the first line and wrap it around the second line several times, making sure to keep the wraps tight and neat, then pinch the tag end.

  3. Take the second line and wrap it around the first line in the same way.

  4. Insert the end of each line back through the loops that were created by the wraps.

  5. Tighten the knot by pulling on both ends of the lines.

The Double Uni Knot

This versatile knot is perfect for joining two pieces of fishing line together when you're making leaders. It's super strong and reliable, which is why it's often used with different types or sizes of line. Here's how to do it:

  1. Overlap the two lines to be joined.

  2. Tie a simple knot with one of the lines, making sure to leave a loop.

  3. Run the tag end of the line through the loop 5 times, and pull tight

  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with your second line

  5. Moisten your knot and pull both lines in opposite directions to tighten the two knots together.
